Importing contacts
Updated October 18, 20262 min read
The Contacts section stores the people you've saved with a name. When such a person writes or calls, their name — not their number — is shown in chats, in the incoming call window and in the call history. You can save contacts one by one — in a chat (the "⋮" menu → Create contact) or during a call. And if you already have a list in Excel, you can upload it all at once.
How to upload
- Open the profile menu at the top → Contacts and click Import.
- Click Download template and fill it in: first column — name, second — phone number, one contact per row. Write numbers in any usual format:
8 706 660 1005,+7 706 660-10-06. - Click Choose an .xlsx file, pick the filled-in file and click Check.
- Chato shows the result — without saving anything yet:
- New — these numbers aren't in your contacts yet;
- Will update — the number is already saved under a different name (you can see the old one);
- Unchanged — this contact already exists;
- Errors — the number isn't recognized, there's no name, or the name is longer than 120 characters;
- Repeats — the number already appeared higher up in the file; the first row is kept.
- If everything looks right, click Save — Chato tells you how many contacts were added and how many were updated.
Rows with errors and repeats aren't saved — fix them in the file and upload it again.
Limits
- Import is available to the owner and admins.
- Only Excel
.xlsxfiles, up to 5 MB and up to 5000 contacts at a time. - A number must have at least 10 digits. Contacts are matched by the last 10 digits of the number.
Names or numbers
At the top of the Contacts section, the owner or an admin can choose what to show In chats and calls:
- Names — the name from Contacts instead of the number, if the number is saved there;
- Numbers — always the phone number, even for saved contacts.
